Frequently Asked Questions and Volunteer application form
Is there a cost to volunteer at New Hope?
- Yes, there is. New Hope is a grass roots, hands-on Non-Government Organisation (NGO) operating
- in one of the poorest Provinces in Cambodia. Its ability to exist and to continue to deliver its
- humanitarian work is dependant on the donations of individuals, fundraising and sponsorship.
Volunteer placement fees
· A flat fee of US$400 is charged for volunteer placements, whether for one week or one months.
· This donation goes directly to supporting our Education Centre and Khmer staffs’ salaries. New Hope’s teachers are also underprivileged and their salaries help fund their higher education.
· Your US$400 donation covers:
· Administrative support in the lead up to your arrival in Siem Reap. This includes volunteer placement and general communication
· Transfer from the airport to your nominated accommodation
· An orientation tour of Siem Reap town, including handy tips on services, restaurants etc.
· A tour of the local villages within Mondul 3, where many of the school students live
· On-ground support during your stay
· A Certificate of Participation in our Volunteer Aid Program.
Or create your own fundraiser
Some volunteers choose to create their own fundraisers, creating awareness for New Hope and their pending adventure, raising money at the same time.
At the discretion of New Hope, the US$400 donation may be waived in place of funds raised.
The option of creating your own personal fundraising webpage where you can accept
online donations on behalf of your charity or cause is available at:
Accommodation
Where will I stay and how much will it cost?
· We recommend that volunteers stay at our friendly partner, Golden Village Guesthouse. Golden Village is a traditional guesthouse located close to the centre of Siem Reap and markets. We’ve found that staying with other volunteers provides a great support system and the camaraderie shared is a very unique and positive experience. Please see www.goldenvillageguesthouse.com
· Prices start from US$ 9 to $12 per night.
· Single room with fan, cable TV, free wi-fi, ensuite and hot water – US $9
· Twin room with fan, cable TV, free wi-fi, ensuite and hot water – US $12
· Air-conditioning is an extra cost, quoted on request.
· Monthly discounted rates are also available upon request.
· Upon New Hope receiving your Placement Fee, we will arrange your accommodation, however all accommodation costs will remain your responsibility and must be settled directly between your guesthouse/hotel and yourself.
Working Hours
What hours am I expected to work?
New Hope Community School educates 600 students daily, teaching English, math,
computer skills, moral and gender equality, sewing and sport.
Classes run daily between 08:00 and 10:30 and again from 14:00 to 18:00.
We ask each volunteer to commit to either the morning or afternoon session. The balance of time can be used for sight-seeing or other personal activities.
Please note: We accept volunteers for School placement for a period of 1 week to 1 months.
Helen Bonner Health Centre / Medical Clinic and Outreach Program
We require volunteers for the Medical Clinic or Outreach Program to commit at least half a day.
Our Khmer Doctors work a full day – from 08:00 until 17:00, treating up to 100 patients a day. A three hour lunch break falls within this time.
Please note: We accept volunteers for our Medical Clinic and Outreach Program for a period of one month.
Sightseeing
· We encourage you to see as much of Siem Reap and surrounding areas to complement your volunteering experience, and to gain a greater understanding of the Khmer history and culture.
· New Hope operates a tourist business providing guided tours of local attractions and educating visitors on the plight of the Cambodian people. Volunteers and visitors to New Hope can access this service, adding to their Siem Reap experience. Tours include trips to the ancient Hindu temple Angkor Wat, the Floating Village, the Flooded Forest, Koulen Mountain, and many others surrounding Siem Reap.
· In booking one of our tours at grass roots prices, you are further helping to support the New Hope community and provide employment to our local guides who work hard to support their own families.
· All tours can be organized with our Tours Office at our Community Centre or by email Voluntourism@newhopecambodia.com If you are a lone volunteer, don’t despair, as often you will meet other volunteers looking for company to see the sights.

Health and Insurance
What vaccinations do I need for Cambodia?
Please refer to your local Doctor for advice on the vaccinations required for Cambodia or follow your country’s Government Travel and Health Advisory Council.
Do I need Medical Travel Insurance?
This of course is a personal preference, however New Hope strongly recommends you do. Most Travel Agents can organise Comprehensive Medical Insurance for you for a very reasonable cost.
Cambodia is a third world country, and good quality health care in Siem Reap is practically non-existent. If a serious illness or accident does eventuate, you may need to be air lifted to a neighboring equipped hospital.
Please note that New Hope Cambodia is not liable for any loss, damage, health issues or injuries you may incur.
What we require from our Volunteers
- copy of your passport showing the personal information and photograph. (Passport
- can also be provided upon arrival).
- on our website for payment options).
- appropriate accommodation and transfer bookings).
- your New Hope Induction.
How should I transfer the money from my fundraising efforts?
· If using the option of creating your own personal fundraising webpage through which you can accept online donations on behalf of your charity or cause www.gofundraise.com.au/CharityDetail.aspx?cid=307
funds will automatically be directed to New Hope Cambodia Business Bank Account.
· A simple and safe way of transferring funds abroad with no transfer costs to you is via our website prior to your departure from your home country. If you have a preference for your funds to be directed to a certain area of New Hope, please note this in the comments section while making your donation transfer, or advise by email.
· Another option is to present New Hope with your hard earned donation upon your arrival and induction, wherein you will receive a receipt for your much appreciated and lifesaving funds.
