Families in NEED!
Women and Children's Shelter - July 2008
In July, we opened our Shelter Home. This came about as a necessity, as three of our students were suffering abuse at home. We tried numerous avenues to try and improve their home situations, but to no avail. Hence, our home for 'Abused or Destitute women and children' came about.

We currently have Guardianship of 5 children:

· Our first in need were a 10 and 13 year old brother and sister, malnourished, suffering abuse from their Stepfather, their mother H.I.V. positive and biological father deceased.
· Our second intake was an orphaned 10 year old girl, both parents haven fallen victim to H.I.V. and was suffering domestic violence in her living environment.
· Our third was a 13 year old boy from a family of 8 children, father deceased and family starving. His mother recently suffered a severe traffic accident and could no longer care for her children.
· Our newest addition is a darling 10 year old boy. His father died in a work accident, his mother is currently ill with HIV and still working, and her wish is to ensure her son is not  alone after she dies. She is so thankful to see her son now in a family environment and  given a chance at education, an opportunity that she herself never received.

We leased a house, employed a wonderful House Mum, Srey Mom , to cook and care for the children and turned it into a home. Our home is a wonderful shelter, with the children receiving good nutritional food, clothing, and medical attention. We are hoping to keep our Shelter as a family environment as much as possible.  We insist the children do household chores, learn responsibility, attend Public Khmer School 6 days per week and English classes at New Hope.

Dental care arrives in Mondul 3 - June 2008
June brought two wonderful Volunteer Dentists from the U.K.

Our Classroom was transformed into a Dental Surgery, with student’s lined up, all very excited about taking the chair. While Kental Panchal and Sinal Shah worked tirelessly with our children and families, cleaning, filling and extracting, our Volunteer Teachers kept the waiting crowds occupied with games and dancing.

Most children had never before received dental treatment, so unfortunately many needed fillings, and numerous extractions. However, our ‘Tough little cookies’ did not complain and were rewarded with toothbrushes, toothpaste and stickers.

A HUGE THANKS to Kental and Sinal, and hopefully their visit will set the wheels in motion for many more professionals to embark on a similar journey, and reap the rewards of meeting and giving to our very special and needy children and families.

International Women's Day - March 2008
Some schools in Siem Reap held a Public Holiday for International Women’s Day in March.  However, the children at New Hope were so enthusiastic about attending class, they voted not to have the day off.

We decided to make the day a little different by holding a Fun Games Day, with the children keen to show volunteer teachers Cambodian games and also learn some games that children play in other parts of the world.

Kemsour was enthusiastic to give the village children a special day, so went all out to ensure the children experienced a traditional Cambodian Fun Day with competitions and prizes. We filled gift boxes filled with trinkets, such as a bracelets, erasers, sweets, pens, toothbrushes and then sealed them with a colourful bow. The children couldn’t believe their eyes when they spotted the table full of prizes, balls and a big pile of Cambodian Riel.  Kemsour had organised enough money to ensure that every child took home 500 Riel to their family, which is approximately 37.5 US cents.

The children laughed and played and mothers gathered around carrying younger siblings, cheering them on. The language barrier was non existent that day, as laughter seems to be a universal language in itself. A traditional presentation ceremony was had for each winner, with the children formally thanking the sponsors. Then, of course, a big que formed to receive their 500 Riel, followed by a mad dash home to show their parent or family their prize and money.
